Whatever words you like to use, what we all have in common is our flesh and bones, our blood and guts, our anatomy.

The human body is a remarkable feat of engineering, and our sexual systems are certainly amongst the most exquisite features of our anatomy. More important than what we call our parts is how we use them, and the key is understanding the mechanics of pleasure: how nerve endings, muscle, blood flow and stimulation combine to create the sensation of sexual pleasure and orgasm. But once in awhile, it is fun to stop and look at the origins of our sexual language, a humorous dip into the fascinating world of etymology.

Let's start with breasts and our favorite English words for the female chest: boobs, tits and knockers. The word "breast" has both Old English ("breost")  and Germanic ("breustam") roots, both meaning "to swell" or "to sprout." This is a nice reminder of the nature of the female breast: softness swelling from the chest, ripe and beautiful flesh swelling from the strong muscular foundation of the pectoral muscles.

The word "tit" is a variant of "teat" and the word "titty" is on record from 1746. Tit, then, reminds us of the reproductive function of the breast, the production and delivery of mother's milk to the eager infant. Of course, the very adult desire to suck on nipples is related to this primal need, so perhaps our continued use of the word "tit" evokes some feelings of being nourished, fed, nursed.

The most casual and common word for breasts, perhaps, is "boobs" which is a more recent slang, said to date to 1929. Other spellings such as "bubby" are found as far back as the seventeenth century, and are thought to be derivatives from the Latin and Germanic words for the breast.

As humans, we have been giving our favorite body parts pet names and slang codes for centuries, thus the richness and variety of language we use now to talk about our sexual anatomy. But whatever we call them- tits, breasts or boobies, they nourish us all in youth and many of us in adulthood, a seemingly unending well of fascination, attraction, and yes, even the most mysterious of all, love. ]]>
